WALKING IN SILENCED FOR THE SILENCE (A global annual DV solidarity walk)

Walking In Silence For The Silenced is a global annual domestic violence solidarity walk, to amplify the voice of the campaign against domestic violence, an initiative of Women of Concern Professional and Strategic Conscious Networking (WOCPSCN), a New York-based non-profit organisation with a core mission to achieve gender equality and gender equity through replicable initiatives that address women’s health, education, and community development. (www.wocpscn.org) The walk started in 2013 by Ms Loretta Green-Williams who lost her daughter to domestic violence as she died in the hands of her partner who shot her through the heart on April 20, 2001.  As in the majority of domestic violence cases, where the silence of the victims and survivors emboldens the perpetrators, breaking the silence by giving a voice to the survivors and the victims is a very important aspect of the campaign if we are going to record any success combating this menace.

The objective of the walk is not only to give a voice to victims and survivors of domestic violence but to also eradicate it. The uniqueness of the walk lies in the fact that anybody can walk, either individually or in a group as the emphasis is not on the crowd but on the awareness and the spirit of the advocacy. The first Saturday in the month of November every year is the fixed date for the walk.

Having appointed Mr. Abiodun Adeleke, the CEO of Golden Oasis Spring Foundation into its Board of Trustees on 16th December 2022, organising the walk in Nigeria has now become a statutory responsibility.  The 2023 edition of the event which also marked the 10th Anniversary of the solidarity walk was held on Saturday 4th of November 2023 globally with Nigeria well represented as the walk took place across different locations in Lagos, Ogun, and Kaduna states.

PREVENTING TEENAGE PREGNANCY

This project is about equipping young girls with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to protect themselves. Without this, adolescents, especially young girls, are at risk of being exposed to teenage pregnancy and sexual exploitation. We can no longer sit down and expect things to change, we must rise and begin to push for the change we desire to see.

The girl child is centrally positioned to affect every aspect of life. If she is protected, guided and empowered to achieve her goals in life, then we will have a supporting wife, a lovely mother, a versatile colleague in the workplace and a great leader. The girl child is a goldmine we cannot afford to lose.

SAY NO TO DRUG ABUSE

The menace of drug abuse has become a national one where the challenges are not just restricted to a section of the country but cut across.  People who inject drugs constitute a sizeable proportion of high-risk drug users in Nigeria. 1 in 5 high-risk drug users is injecting drugs. The advocacy campaign on NO TO DRUG ABUSE focuses primarily on secondary schools across the country. While we acknowledge the fact that even some are already compromised at this level, we still believe that this is the best level to tackle the menace as many of those who are compromised are still at the formative stage.
