BEACON OF HOPE (SDG 4 QUALITY EDUCATION)

The gross underrepresentation of the girl child in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) related fields has become a thing of great concern. The situation is worse in Africa where the perception towards the girl child’s education is apathetic. The cultural bias in most African societies that gives preference to the male child over the girl child when the debate is about which child should get an education is fueling the decline in the number of girls getting a university education. Aside from cultural biases, poverty is another major factor hindering girls from getting an education.

Beacon of Hope is a university scholarship programme that specifically targets bright and intelligent secondary school girls from poor homes with an impressive academic record of performance in STEM-related subjects. The beneficiary will be committed to pursuing a university degree in STEM courses to qualify for the scholarship.
